Assignment objectives: to evaluate health information in entertainment media in the light of health communication theory and research. Description This assignment requires you to choose an episode of a popular television program, or a feature film, and analyze the health-related content with respect to accuracy and underlying message.
Your paper should include the following sections. With the exception of the introduction, start each section with a heading (see sample).
1. introduction to the program or film. Give a brief synopsis of the plot of the program or film. If you are writing about an episode of an ongoing series you will probably also need to provide a little bit of information about the overall structure, theme, and cast of characters. Also explain relevant plot sequence related to the health topic. This section should be about one paragraph long. . 2. Brief literature review. Present information from credible sources about the background of the problem. This information should be concise, but it should be clear that you have a good picture of the extent of the problem, the people affected, symptoms, and causes. You should use a minimum of 5 sources for this information, and each should be cited using parenthetical references as per APA format guidelines. All references must be cited in the body of the paper. Your sources should either be: a) a governmental agency (e.g. the CDC, NIH, NIMH); b) an academic journal article; or c) a highly credible health-related organization like the American Cancer Society (or equivalent for your issue). Your textbook does not count as a source.) This section should also be short, probably one to two paragraphs. In this section focus on what a reader who is unfamiliar with this health issue would need to know in order to follow the analysis you are providing. 3. Comparison of content of programming with accurate real-world health information about the topic. The is the heart of your analysis. You may comment on accuracy of information, appropriateness of the person shown dealing with the health issue, ethical issues such as whether the message is going to cause stigmatization or negative behavior, etc. Be sure to think carefully about the implications of your specific chosen media vehicle. You may need to cite the sources that you already used in your literature review to make your point effectively. 4. Conclusion. Draw a conclusion about the possible impact of the health content of the programming you have described on viewers in the likely target audience of the programming. In this section, you should also make an explicit connection with course material about entertainment media and health. This section should also be about one paragraph long.
Examples of student papers are in uploaded files. Format Requirements The main body of the paper should be about 3 to 4 pages (not including references), 12 pt. Times Roman font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins all around. If you turn in fewer than 2 pages, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to address all of the requirements adequately, and your grade is likely to suffer. Citations and references must conform to APA format—but do not include an abstract, or running head. Try to write concisely, editing out unnecessary content. Tips for Successful Completion Entertainment media sometimes does an excellent, sometimes a woefully inadequate, job of portraying health issues. Whichever you conclude, provide lots of specific evidence. Assessment Criteria See the rubric in the uploaded files. The assignment grade will be weighted as follows: description of programming = 20%; literature review = 30%; analysis = 40%; grammar/style/format = 10%. Examples of previous class papers are provided below. These are not perfect, but they generally do a good job of addressing assignment objectives. IMPORTANT NOTE: The “literature review” component was not required at the time these were written. That is a separate section you will need to add. You will see, though, that these examples do cite sources as they make their argument about the appropriateness of media content. The “Using APA” document has guidelines for the most basic types of citations with APA. You can also find guidance at Purdue OWL.
