Defend or attack one of Epicurus’s arguments that “death is nothing to us”, or one of Lucretius’s arguments about death. (You don’t have to write on this topic. Other possible topics will be added soon.)
Structure:
After your introduction, your paper must have these two parts:
1. Exposition. The argument you have chosen may have been presented in a few words in the text, but you need to both explain and defend your interpretation of that argument. Thus, if you choose one of Epicurus’s two arguments, you should begin by explaining what you think he means when he concludes that “death is nothing to us.” Depending on which argument you choose, it might also prove useful to explain the doctrine of hedonism and how that doctrine relates to the reasoning in the argument you have chosen.
2. Critique. Here you have the option of defending or attacking the argument you have chosen. Do not simply state your opinion of the argument. You will not receive a passing grade unless you provide support for your opinion. If you attack the argument, you should argue that at least one of its assumptions is false or implausible, or that the logic of the argument is flawed (in other words, that the arguments premises, even if true, don’t prove the argument’s conclusion). If you defend the argument, you need to do more than simply state that you agree with it. You need to argue that certain key assumptions in the argument are true or plausible, or that the logic of the argument is flawless. Another thing you can do is to reply to objections that might be raised against the argument.
Then summaries everything into a conclusion
