All students are required to write a book review essay of one of the four books from the second half of the course. Your book critique should be 8-10 pages in length and follow the directions below. Your review will be based on your grammar (style), and critical content. Students should also consult at least two book reviews of this book. Please cite the reviews in your footnotes and bibliography. Remember, a book review is not a summary of the book’s plot. It is first and foremost an assessment of the work’s value as an historical source. Be sure to write your review in the third person and offer a critical assessment of the book.
Introduction (1-2 paragraphs)
This portion of the review should provide your reader with a clear sense of your purpose in reviewing the book. You should introduce the reader to the book through a brief discussion of what the book is about, the structure of the book and a short snippet on the author. This information can be obtained by reading the introduction and acknowledgements carefully. This information should encompass 2-3 sentences. The remainder of the introduction should be devoted to establishing clear criteria by which you will assess the book. It is not sufficient to simply say you like or dislike the book. You must identify those elements of the book which make it a useful historical source. These elements can include aspects of the plot, the author’s style of writing (literary devices employed), the sources, or the timeliness or relevance of the material to the contemporary world. Be sure to identify clear criteria and be direct in letting your reader know what is useful about this book.
Body (8-9 pages)
This portion of the review should expand on the 3 or 4 criteria you are using to assess the book. You need to discuss these criteria in a thorough and compelling manner. Use material from the book to support you points. Make sure you have enough evidence to make a strong case for the aspects of the book you think make it useful as an historical source. Poorly chosen criteria can make it difficult to find supporting evidence to make an adequate case. You may wish to outline this section in advance.
Conclusion (1-2 paragraphs)
Use this section to sum up your criteria, introduce material you have no discussed before and make a strong and affirmative assessment about the usefulness of the book as an historical source. Be sure to think carefully about your concluding remarks. A lackluster conclusion can dampen the overall thrust of a paper. Be sure your conclusion preserves the energy of your review and provides an insightful guide for the reader.
